Various binding methods for books

Bookbinding is the magical step that turns a stack of loose papers into a book. The way it is done is crucial to the look and feel of your book. At Jubels, we have our own in-house bookbinding shop, where we offer a variety of binding options. Whether you're looking for durability, flexibility or a luxurious look, we offer the binding method that suits your needs.

Sewn or threadless binding

Almost all books are either sewn or yarn bound. At Jubels, we offer both binding methods and can advise you on the right choice for your book.

Sewn Bound

With sewn-bound books, the loose pages are sewn into small bundles before we attach them to the cover. This makes for a sturdy binding, making the book last longer and paper will never become loose. This makes sewn binding a popular option for books with many pages, such as novels and professional photo books.

At Jubels, we offer several sewn binding methods, including otabind, cahier stitch, singerstitch and the Swiss binding method.

Yarnless bound

In twine binding, we glue the pages of the book directly to the cover without making bundles of them first. This binding method requires fewer materials and the process is usually faster than having your books bound with twine. In addition, it is possible to bind books of different sizes and thicknesses without twine, allowing more flexibility in design and production. Yarnless binding is therefore a common binding method for magazines and portfolios, for example.

Bookbinding without string can, of course, also be done using wire-o. You can read more about this binding method below.

Wire-o binding

Wire-o bound books have a spiral metal wire as the spine. In this binding method, we punch small holes in the pages, through which we then thread and close the spiral. Wire-o binding is therefore also called spiral binding. With this binding method, the pages sit firmly together and yet can be turned easily. Moreover, the book remains effortlessly open on the desired page. Wire-o binding is therefore a frequently used binding method for diaries, cookbooks and brandbooks.

Japanese bookbinding

Japanese bookbinding is an ancient binding method that gives your book a unique look. This yarnless binding consists of multiple bundles of four pages that are folded at the front and remain closed during binding, leaving space between the pages. With the Japanese binding method, therefore, traditionally one side is printed and the inside remains blank. However, it is also possible to print the inside double-sided or use the space between the pages for individual photos, text or drawings, for example. With the right choice of paper, this creates a surprising effect that adds an extra dimension to your book.

Choosing the right binding for your book

Several factors come into play when choosing the right binding for your book. Of course, your personal preference is important, but the purpose of the book, its content and, for example, the number of pages also influence the choice of binding method.

At Jubels, we have the knowledge and techniques to turn any book into a true work of art. We are happy to help you make the right choice of binding. If desired, we will make a proof first to properly assess the result so that your book gets the look it deserves.
